A thought for today

New Student Welcome

It was great to welcome new international students to the University of Greenwich today. Really hope that you all enjoy the activities that have been prepared for you this week. Please don't hesitate to ask questions if you're unsure about anything.
Chaplaincy is here to provide an extra level of support and a confidential listening ear. I'm not here solely for issues of faith or people of faith, I'm here to serve all students and staff at the Medway Campus in whatever way I can.

Following my time with Greenwich students first thing this morning, I went dashing over to Christ Church Canterbury in the Rowan Williams building  ...  only to discover I was exactly one month early for the MCh Surgery Induction (Oct 11th not Sept 11th). There nothing like being organised.

Commemorating 100 years

This morning my father and I attended a service at the Medway Campus to commemorate 100 years since the bombing of what is now our Drill Hall Library. In that one night, 3rd Sept 1917, 131 sailors lost their lives.
It was a well organised and very moving service within which the names of the 131 men were read out.

As part of the day, we had the Faith Space open, in order that families, friends and visitors might see something of how the campus is used today.

Christ Church Canterbury University put on an excellent display of medicine through the years; with many staff & students dressed in nursing costumes from WWI.

In addition, the staff of the Drill Hall Library had honoured the lives lost with several stunningly, beautiful poppy displays.

Bargain Corner

We are thrilled to announce joint winners of our 'bric-a-brac' re-branding competition.  In future you will hear us refer to our 'Bargain Corner' which is now located primarily in Pilkington 005 (although warm clothing is still housed in Blake 001).

Prizes of £25 Amazon vouchers were awarded to Ahmed Abdelgwad & Nariman Mushtaha and to Mohamed Attia. The poster designs they presented were very different but we simply couldn't decided because we loved them both in different ways.

The prize of a £10 Amazon voucher has also been awared to Aiste Steponenaite who came up with the name 'Bargain Corner'.


Attia, we loved the brightness of your poster design, all the fun and quirky clipart, which so emulates your own personality!!).
We also loved the wee ethnic people which is very reflective of our diverse family at Medway Campus.







Ahmed & Nariman, we were immediately attracted to the simplicity of your poster design. In English we would say, "It does what it says on the tin". In the clearest and simplest of terms it provides all the information necessary.

Faversham Hop Festival

Set in the beautiful medieval heart of Faversham, this lively and popular event recalls the traditional festivities associated with the hop harvest and celebrates the town’s unrivalled hop heritage. Now one of the largest free street festivals in the south east, the event boasts plenty to see and do throughout the weekend with entertainment including live music on 5 stages, arts & crafts, Morris Dancers, street performers and processions.

There was a wide variety of music and entertainment and we spent some time in the sun, enjoying the sounds of David Midgen and the Twisted Roots.

In addition to watching several Morris sides, some slightly questionable belly-dancing, and listening to a great drum troupe, whose name I sadly can't remember.

There were loads of food stalls and I searched high and low for a steak sandwich  ... it was finger-licking good!!!

 I also desperately wanted to add to my mad hat collection but at £35 a hat I just couldn't justify it :-( 

All-in-all it was a fab day out and I won't hesitate to go again next year!!
