10% OFF Winter Sale

Yesterday we held our
Winter Sale @ Uni,
with 10% off all clothing
- hats, scarves, gloves, jumpers & coats -
plus 10% off all of our household items
- bedding, saucepans, crockery, cultery, etc.
The money raised is put into our World Cafe fund,
which helps to pay for some of the special events
we run each year - such as
the Welcome Meal, Chinese New Year,
Easter, Diwali, Christmas, etc.

We made a grand total of £143!!!

Here some of the students model our hats for sale
- I think Wisnu & Anu look especially attractive :-)
Please note: Joyce's hat is not for sale!!!

I think it's very important hear to THANK all those people from a variety of churches and staff at the university, who have so generously donated items to sell.  Thanks too to Frank & Lynda who help me out so often.  I think it's important that you know how much these sales are appreciated by students.  If they had their way, we'd be doing this every week!!!

Did you know?

November 5th each year is what we call Guy Fawkes Night; but might also be referred to as Fireworks Night or Bonfire Night.

Its history begins with the events of 5th November 1605, when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London, and months later the introduction of the Observance of 5th November Act (commonly known as ‘The Thanksgiving Act’) enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot's failure.

There is a well-known poem attached to this day, which begins with the words:

Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
         The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
         I know of no reason
         Why the Gunpowder Treason
         Should ever be forgot

Why not join hundreds of other people for
the annual public firework display put on
by Medway Council. This will be on the
Great Lines Heritage Park from 7pm
on Saturday, November 1st 2014.

After the display, come and join us
for hot soup, snacks and games at
St Mark’s Old Vicarage Hall,
Vicarage Road  ME7 5JA

Bring & Share

We had a full house yesterday for our first Bring & Share lunch of this academic year.  A full house of people and LOTS of amazing food ...
"Aiste, thanks oodles for coming early and helping me out"
"Chiao, seriously - THREE desserts?!"

There were too many people to gather in one room for games. So, several played RAPIDOUGH in the back lounge ...

Whilst others got competitive, initially over PIT, and then several slightly violent games of SPOONS ...

And a rather noisy challenge at UNO in the front lounge ...

As always I had a lovely afternoon, enjoy having my house full of people; but after an unpleasant & sleepless night, this is me looking slightly frazzled at the end of the afternoon ...

On a personal note ...

A few new pics of baby Jonah Eli ... my new great nephew. This was my first visit to see him at just two weeks old.

Meeting great-grampa, Bill
With my lovely brother and Jonah's Grampa, Tony

Diwali @ the World Cafe

It's always fun to recognise various cultural events at the World Cafe and yesterday saw us celebrating Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights.
I'm always looking for an excuse to wear my Salwar Kameez.
Thank you to all those who arrived early to help decorate the student support area - it looked fab!!!
In addition to our usual array of cake and biscuits we also served samosas and onion bhajis.

Thanks also go to Leesa and friends who blessed lots of the girls with beautiful henna tattoes.

All the event was missing was some good Bollywood sounds! Though Anu and I had a brief attempt at the 'light-bulb' dance :-)
