Stress Awareness Month

Ever feel like this??
I know that some of you can most definitely relate!!  Well, April is Stress Awareness Month and whilst a degree of stress can be healthy for us when it becomes over-whelming or is over a prolonged period of time that's when it starts to negatively affect our emotional, physical, mental and psychological health and we need to take action.

Throughout April, I will be posting some advice adapted from the book '10 Keys to Happier Living' by Vanessa King.  On occasion such tips might seem obvious or even petty, but when we take time to stop and challenge ourselves, are we really acting on them.  We all know we need exercise and fresh air, but do we take it. We all know that working too many hours is detrimental but do we intentionally carve out time for ourselves.  For most of us it is within our power to make some small but very positive steps in the right direction.  I really hope that this month you will take time for yourself!!

If you are a member of STAFF at the Medway Campus, do please take note of the poster below and join me for one of our weekly De-Stress Coffee & Cake Breaks throughout April. Sign up is helpful but not essential.

Where are they now? Michel

Hello everyone, I am Michel Mina from Egypt, I spent three years studying an engineering bachelor degree in the University of Greenwich. Which were the best years of my life.

The first week of arrival to the UK in September 2015 was challenging for me to adapt to a different culture. But I'm thankful to Lynne and many other friends, who invited me along to TABLEtalk and the World Cafe.

These weekly meetings were not just about socialise after a busy week of lectures, they were also an awesome opportunity to meet people from different cultures and nationalities as well as a chance to talk about quite a wide range of topics. This has opened my mind and made me more understanding to diversity and international differences. TABLEtalk has also improved my personal skills, since some of the topics covered there were focusing on public speaking, team work and leadership. These are some of the skills that I used during my studies, which I don't think I would have learnt easily by myself.

We also had brilliant parties and events such as ...

The welcome meal, introducing new students to each other.

Bonfire night, which was the first time to see fireworks

Delicious BBQ day

Dover Castle day trip

Bowling night
Christmas Eve meal

I finished my 3rd year and graduated in July 2018. Now, I am working as a mechanical engineer in a friendly supporting company, which is based in Exeter in the southwest of UK.  The company I work with is manufacturing oil and gas drilling products. I am happy there, gaining a lot of experience and progressing through my career.  Exeter is a beautiful city surrounded by nice places to visit like Cornwall and the south coast.

I would like to thanks Mohamed, Arshad, Amira and many great friends, who were more than brothers and sisters. They helped me to not feel lonely or home sick. They also advised and gave me tips on how to adapt in the UK and improve my academic and life skills.

Lynne, thank you so much for your efforts in managing these trips and events and ensuring that these weekly meetings are always taking place.

Thought for the week ...

World Poetry Day

Did you know that March 21st is
WORLD POETRY DAY.
I've never really been one for poetry, but here are
two classics I remember from school ...

Albert and the Lion
by Marriott Edgar

There's a famous seaside place called Blackpool,
That's noted for fresh air and fun,
And Mr and Mrs Ramsbottom
Went there with young Albert, their son.

A grand little lad was young Albert,
All dressed in his best; quite a swell
With a stick with an 'orse's 'ead 'andle,
The finest that Woolworth's could sell.

They didn't think much of the Ocean:
The waves, they were fiddlin' and small,
There was no wrecks and nobody drownded,
Fact, nothing to laugh at at all.

So, seeking for further amusement,
They paid and went into the Zoo,
Where they'd Lions and Tigers and Camels,
And old ale and sandwiches too.

There were one great big Lion called Wallace;
His nose were all covered with scars -
He lay in a somnolent posture,
With the side of his face on the bars.

Now Albert had heard about Lions,
How they was ferocious and wild -
To see Wallace lying so peaceful,
Well, it didn't seem right to the child.

So straightway the brave little feller,
Not showing a morsel of fear,
Took his stick with its 'orse's 'ead 'andle
And pushed it in Wallace's ear.

You could see that the Lion didn't like it,
For giving a kind of a roll,
He pulled Albert inside the cage with 'im,
And swallowed the little lad 'ole.

Then Pa, who had seen the occurrence,
And didn't know what to do next,
Said 'Mother! Yon Lion's 'et Albert',
And Mother said 'Well, I am vexed!'

Then Mr and Mrs Ramsbottom -
Quite rightly, when all's said and done -
Complained to the Animal Keeper,
That the Lion had eaten their son.

The keeper was quite nice about it;
He said 'What a nasty mishap.
Are you sure that it's your boy he's eaten?'
Pa said "Am I sure? There's his cap!'

The manager had to be sent for.
He came and he said 'What's to do?'
Pa said 'Yon Lion's 'et Albert,
'And 'im in his Sunday clothes, too.'

Then Mother said, 'Right's right, young feller;
I think it's a shame and a sin,
For a lion to go and eat Albert,
And after we've paid to come in.'

The manager wanted no trouble,
He took out his purse right away,
Saying 'How much to settle the matter?'
And Pa said "What do you usually pay?'

But Mother had turned a bit awkward
When she thought where her Albert had gone.
She said 'No! someone's got to be summonsed' -
So that was decided upon.

Then off they went to the P'lice Station,
In front of the Magistrate chap;
They told 'im what happened to Albert,
And proved it by showing his cap.

The Magistrate gave his opinion
That no one was really to blame
And he said that he hoped the Ramsbottoms
Would have further sons to their name.

At that Mother got proper blazing,
'And thank you, sir, kindly,' said she.
'What waste all our lives raising children
To feed ruddy Lions? Not me!'

World Cafe @ Diversity Fair

This week is World Fest at the Medway Campus and various activities are happening throughout the week to celebrate our diversity as a community.
Today, for one day only, the World Cafe relocated to the Student Hub for Tea & Scones.  It was lovely to see a good number of our regulars there, along with some new faces.

It also proved worthwhile spending time creating a diversity poster to colour  ...  kept a number of students engaged for well over an hour :-)
... and I love the finished product
which will get displayed in the
Chaplaincy Hospitality space.

Henna Tattoo'ing was also super popular ...

Celebrating St Patrick's Day

This year at TABLEtalk we have been working through all the Saints Days celebrated within the United Kingdom.
So far, we've had haggis and ceilidh'd our way through St Andrew's Day and we've made dragons for St David's Day  ...  so what can we do for St Patrick's Day??
Oh yes, taste Guinness and hunt for 4-leaf clovers (or shamrocks)

Our treasure hunt was very entertaining for me as I watched students get sooooooo close to finding a four-leaf clover but missing it. Eventually all seven were found and the lucky recipients got something green and edible  ...
From left to right: Rhandi won peppermint toffees, Enrique won
a cabbage, Aiste got peppermint matchmakers, Afaf some kiwis,
Jaffa won apple juice, Jessie got cereal (in a green box) and
Yihan won a bottle of lemon & lime drink

Having asked everyone to come wearing green, our additional green-themed selfie corner was also a popular spot

The wee taste of Guinness and soda bread went down well.
For entertainment purposes, half our evening was spent doing a Beetle drive, which was won by Amira, with 68 points ...

Many thanks to all those who came and made
the evening such a great event.
With Afaf & Dilyara
