Remembrance Sunday is the second Sunday in November and is a day for the nation to remember and honour those who have sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom.
November 11th itself marks Armistice Day, remembering the end of the hostilities of the First World War at 11am, November 11th 1918.
As a university campus we are unable to gather together, as we would normally do outside the Drill Hall Library where 130 men lost their lives on September 3rd, 1917.
We have however prepared a video of this important service:
Around this time of year you will see many people wearing red poppies on their coats. This symbol was inspired by the famous World War One poem ‘In Flanders Fields’. Flanders was one of the great battle sites of the war and the poem begins …In Flanders fields
the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
“My abundant thanks go to all those who took part in the making of this Remembrance Day 2020 video and to the staff of the Drill Hall Library for all their help. Special thanks go to Susantha (Jeff) Dissanayake (UoG PhD) for his technical skills and gracious attitude."
Lynne Martin (Medway Campus Chaplain)
