November 5th each year is what we call Guy Fawkes Night; but might also be
referred to as Fireworks Night or Bonfire Night.
Its history begins with the events of 5th November
1605, when Guy Fawkes,
a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives
the plotters had placed beneath the House of
Lords. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on his
life, people lit bonfires
around London, and months later the introduction of the Observance of 5th November
Act (commonly known as ‘The Thanksgiving Act’) enforced an annual
public day of thanksgiving for the plot's failure.
There is a well-known poem attached to this day, which
begins with the words:
Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot
Why not join hundreds of other people for
the annual public firework display put on
by Medway Council. This will be on the
Great Lines Heritage Park from 7pm
on Saturday, November 1st 2014.
After the display, come and join us
for hot soup, snacks and games
at
St Mark’s Old Vicarage Hall,
Vicarage Road
